Uyen-
I write as a forestry student undertaking a post-graduate research
project, the aim of which is to develop pre-harvest inventory methods that forecast both total volume and potential log dimensions f
rom individual sale lots. The information currently provided on
stands tends to be, from the sawmillers' viewpoint, of limited value for harvesting and planning purposes, and some doubt exists here i
n Ireland as to the reliability of recently adopted Stand Volume
Assortment Tables and inventory methods. Hence this project, the initial thrust of which is to develop a practical inventory system wh
ich will provide more detailed, valuable and reliable information for
individual stands, information which will enable optimum log lengths to be determined, allow investigations into the potential c
onsequences of selecting different lengths, improve planning and
ensure more efficient use of the timber resource. Achieving this will require localised information on the profile and dimensions of s
ample trees.
I would be extremely grateful if subscribers could provide me with
any information concerning this topic of research, particularly references to literature and publications, contact addresses for o
thers involved in similar projects or any knowledge which has been
gained in the course of such work. At the moment I am involved in studies into the optimum method of accurately representing stem pr
ofile and, subsequently, in the development of a practical inventory
system from which estimates of total volume and the dimensions of volume assortments can be made, without the use of Imperical Sta
nd Tables, which are considered crude and unreliable. These aspects
of the project are of great importance, and the benefit of experience, or suggestions which subscribers may wish to make, in any ar
ea, would be greatly appreciated.
