                    WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL ASIA PACIFIC

                               NEWS RELEASE

                    ******* WORLD WETLANDS DAY *******

                             FEBRUARY 2ND 1996

February 2nd 1996 is the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar
Convention and has been designated as WORLD WETLANDS DAY.

WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL Asia Pacific will be organising activities throughout
the
region to publicise the day and other WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL offices and
organisations working on wetlands are encouraged to do so.

As an example in Malaysia, WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL Asia Pacific will be
organising a week-long exhibition for University students on the wise use of
wetlands. It is hoped that the exhibition at the Universiti Malaya campus will
be officially opened by Datuk Law Heng Ding (Minister for the Environment,
Science and Technology). In addition, press releases will be made in local
newspapers in the run up to the day and a news supplement
called "WETLAND WONDERS" will be launched by the New Straits Times news group
in conjunction with WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL Asia Pacific.

There are many possible activities that could be used to announce to the world
that February 2nd is World Wetland Day! If you organise an activity let us
know so that we can inform the press of what activities are going on
elsewhere. A few suggestions for other regions/offices could include:-

visits to wetland areas for school groups
open days at wetland nature reserve visitor centres
the launch of wetland related activities for 1996
exhibitions and shows on wetlands for the general public
drawing or photography competitions for school children or students
the launch of a wetland bulletin board on the World Wide Web

Please send suggested and/or confirmed activities that you or your office
plans to have to the Information Department of WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL at the
following address ASAP:
