Are there any seedling growers in North America currently using or having
experience in using the "VAPO PLANT SYSTEM" or similar wall-less container
system for growing seedlings? VAPO is marketed by Kekkila Forest, Finland with
sales office in Denmark, and consists of mats of sphagnum peat which seeds are
sown into. As seedling grows, its roots develop in a natural way because there
are no walls to restrict them. Pruning with saws results in larger quantity of
active root tips. Blandin Forestry Staff saw this system in Finland, and we are
interested in trying it out for growing spruce and possibly aspen, if a vendor
can be found.
