The Norwegian Defence Construction Service is carrying out a large scale experiment of noise propagation from explosions in a forest area. From the litterature it is known that the vertical structure of forest stands is of importance for the propagation. Measures of vertical structure at the stand level such as percentage of dominated trees, percentage of self purned stems in relation to mean height, and density of bush understorey have been used. However, maybe there are measures of vertical structure/distibution used within other fields of research that may be appiled. Do you know of any such measures (references)? They should be easy to measure in an objective way on sample plots, along transects etc., and it should be possible to produce estimates at the stand level from several plots/transects/etc. within each stand. The sampling aspect must therefore be considered.
