Wood in landfills

Daniel Schmoldt said a while back that

>While putting wood products into a landfill prevents any further beneficial
>use of the material (no recycling benefit), it has, however, the advantage
>that it puts carbon directly into the soil environment where it can be
>assimilated by micro-organisms.

In addition to the comment that legal landfills are sealed, is it not the
case that within a landfill the wood may be converted to methane which if it
escapes to the atmosphere is a far worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Burning the wood for fuel may release the CO2 more quickly, but as I'm going
to burn something to keep warm (Scotland gets mighty cold) and quite
possibly release CO2 in the process, scrap wood seems to make sense.
