At the risk of sounding arrogant, I have to admit more than a little frustration in having to explain terms like, "even-aged management" and "basal area (BA)" in a forum like this. Even-aged management is *not* a nice way of saying clearcut. It encompasses a broad range of silvicultural strategy based on the ecological fact that many forest communities result from and cycle naturally with large scale natural disurbances. Good silviculture mimics natural disturbance patterns and that sometimes (though not always) means stand replacing harvests that we call clearcuts. Basal area is a measure of stand stocking. It is roughly equivalent (in this context) to standing volume. I recommend _The Practice of Silviculture_ by David Smith. Dan Simonds Rangeley
