To all: Recently while giving a presentation on Spodosols to my graduate soils class I stated that spodosols support syrup-producing maples. I was quickly heckled by my Professor. He said that maples usually had a high demand for nutrients and did not grow well on the low nutrient spodosols. Since I was recently in Maine at the SAF National Convention, I know the northeastern U.S.produces maple syrup. Does anyone have specific sources confirming syrup-producing maples grow well on Spodosols? Any information would be appreciated. I have enjoyed the conversations on the Forestry list server as of late. Judy Haney Graduate Student SFASU Nacogdoches, Texas G_haneyjc@titan.sfasu.edu
