VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT TITLE: INTERN (TWO POSITIONS) The Alaska Boreal Forest Council (ABFC) is offering two 3-6 month internships to college students and college graduates with a keen interest in "community forestry" and consensus-building as they relate to forest policy, practices, and science, public process, the political arena, legislative strategies, organizational development, marketing, and media relations. Increasing world market demand for timber, pulp, and paper products has driven the timber industry to seek lands long-thought marginal. Commercial interest in the taiga of Interior Alaska, largely intact and unfragmented, prompts our efforts in seeking to avoid the mistakes of other regions. This forest ecosystem, America's only taiga ecosystem, is currently under siege, threatened by sweeping proposals and legislation designed to attract large-scale timber development. Learning from the errors of other regions, ABFC promotes sustainable forest ecosystems and complementary human activities. The Alaska Boreal Forest Council was formed in 1992 as a result of broad-based concern over forestry issues in the Tanana Basin. ABFC takes a pro-active approach to forestry issues in the Interior. We seek to promote responsible forest management by expanding the range and content of public dialogue. In creating the conditions which lead to community-wide consensus, we affirm the diversity of opinion and experience represented in our community. Our efforts are geared to information gathering, sharing, and educational outreach. ABFC supports an open public process concerning long-range plans and decisions relating to the Tanana Basin. ABFC focuses on: * Public education of the interconnected economic, social, cultural, and environmental dimensions of Alaska's boreal forest. * Ecological integrity of the region, developing strategies that inform and promote practices that assure its health and biological diversity. * Economic analyses of forest products and services, identifying forest issues of local, regional, and global significance; participation in setting economic objectives for forest resources and promoting locally controlled wood products manufacturing that are socially responsible. * Expanding the range of ecologically safe forestry practices. * Improving agency regulations, industry initiatives, and scientific research through sharing information and working to improve the application of boreal forest research to both conservation and utilization. Job Duties/Responsibilities: The positions requires developing administrative, research and communications projects. The position requires the ability to team with diverse, motivated volunteers and staff to meet the organization's objectives. ABFC encourages applicants of all ethnicities, faiths, orientations and genders. The positions will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska. * manage office -- answer telephone, photocopying, filing, maintain data base, schedule committee meetings, provide day-to-day continuity, administer sale of merchandise; * targeted research -- non-timber forest products, legislative bill analysis, analyze forest inventory; * organizational development -- work with fundraising committee, track grants, write grant proposals, assist with conferences and workshops, organize membership drive, secure IRS 501 (c) (3) status. * publications -- production and distribution of newsletter, fact sheets, research reports and other publications. This is an excellent opportunity to gain direct experience with public interest organizations, develop expertise in the area of forest conservation and management, and gain valuable office/computer skills and experience. Additional opportunities for learning about Alaska's Interior region, by ski, dog sled, or sauna, are included. Housing, travel assistance and/or small stipends may/will be available. Both internship positions are available immediately. Please send resume, cover letter, writing sample, time of availability, and a list of three references to Intern Committee, fax 907-457-5185, or e-mail <abfc@igc.apc.org>. Closing date is Monday, January 15, 1996.
