After an approach from the state Forestry Corporation of New Zealand the Waiariki Polytechic has agreed to (quote) "stop using Waiariki Polytechnic's computer facilities for the dissemination of information on the possible sale of Kaingaroa Forest" (unquote). Staff of the Forest Education Centre will abide by that edict. However the New Zealand state should note that it has the same rights as any other user to monitor internet traffic, to criticise views to which it is opposed, and to correct what it perceives to be errors of fact in the usual way - i.e by posting messages to mailing lists or bulletin boards. To go beyond that and prevail on institutions of learning to "stop .. the dissemination of information" (whatever the medium) is by definition obscurantist. Please note that, notwithstanding the quote in the first paragraph, this message does not state or in any way imply that any forest in New Zealand may be available for purchase or not available for purchase. Nor does this message necessarily represent the position of Waiariki Polytechnic. Geoff Fischer Forest Hand 2
