Kaingaroa is a coniferous plantation forest of 188000 hectare mainly Pinus radiata, situated in the Central North Island region. It is currently under the control of the New Zealand government (NZ govt) authorities who propose to transfer ownership to a private owner - presumably of foreign domicile. Constitutional background: The NZ govt is responsible to the British monarch who appoints a Governor-General over NZ, who in turn appoints a Prime Minister. There is also an elected body (Parliament) whose members must give allegiance to the British monarch in order to take their seats. British rule was established in 1840. Since then there have been many outbreaks of armed and passive resistance by Maori (original Polynesian inhabitants) and Pakeha (people of European descent). Opponents of the British crown/NZ govt deny its right to alienate the forests which were planted on Maori land, using tax revenue taken from Maori and Pakeha, and, at times, using political detainees as forced labour. They require that control over the forests revert back to the people of Aotearoa. Outside interests should take cogniscance of the constitutional background before becoming involved in negotiations with the British crown/NZ govt for purchase of assets claimed by the people of Aotearoa.
