Vacant position: Forest health asessments
We currently have an opening for a specialist in forest health assessments.
Forest health is increasingly cited in lists of sustainability criteria
etc., but its definition and assessment are controversial. While
considerable emphasis has been given in the past to crown transparency as
an indicator, it is now the right time to seek to expand forest health
assessments through the use of more appropriate indicators. These might
include indicators of tree condition (e.g. physiological processes or
biochemical properties), indicators associated with other forest vegetation
(e.g. injury to herbs), indicators associated with forest soils and a range
of others.
We are looking for someone who could develop forest health indicators as
part of a major programme on forest ecosystem research currently being
undertaken in Switzerland. The primary aim of the programme is to assess,
monitor and explain the condition of forest ecosystems in Switzerland,
particularly in relation to anthropogenic impacts.
The minimum requirement for the post is a Ph.D. or equivalent in an
appropriate subject (e.g. forestry, ecology, biology, geography, botany,
environmental science), and a good knowledge of English and at least one of
the following languages: German, French or Italian. The successful
applicant would join an international team of scientists working on the
project.
The project is based at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and
Landscape Research at Birmensdorf in Switzerland. The Institute employs
about 300 people in academic, technical and administrative positions. The
scientists have backgrounds in forestry and agricultural sciences, biology,
engineering, chemistry, geography, physics, information services and
mathematics. The Institute has an annual budget of about USD 25 million.
The post is available from January 1 1996, and will run for 4 years with
possibilities for further renewals. Applications, including a curriculum
vitae and a list of publications, should be sent to the Personnel Officer,
Mr. A. Wihler, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape
research, Zuercherstrasse 111, CH-8903 Birmensdorf, Switzerland. Please
indicate that the application is for Post No. 124. Deadline for
applications is 24 November 1995.
Further information about the post can be obtained from Dr. John Innes
(Tel.: +41 1 739 2216), and information about the Institute is available at
