Defining Sustainability -Reply

I would certainly be pleased to learn more about this exercise - especially
as my work with different eucalypt forest companies is becoming
increasingly focussed on sustainable management. I am just about to send
Shell and Smurfit a proposal directed towards examining the impact of
mycorrhizas in sustainable management of eucalyptus plantations -
especially the impact on growth, nutrient cycling and ecosystem stability.

Central to to this whole issue of sustainable forest management is the need
to protect the soil resource, maintain soil fertility and adopt practices which
ensure the nutrient supply capacity of the soil is sustained in a more
efficient and environmentally acceptable manner. One of the key elements
of such an approach should be to stimulate the biological activity of the soil
particularly the mycorrhizal component. Mycorrhizas represent the most
efficient mechanism for conserving the productive capacity of the land
while optimising the rate of turnover and recycling of nutrients. And yet
there is so little work/information going on belowground with respect to
mycorrhizas, nutrient cycling, organic matter management and soil
ecosystem stability. Hopefully thats what we will be able to put right with
our new proposal to the eucalypt companies.

regards

Philip
