I have recently read an article in National Geographic (August 95, I
believe) which described a region near Cape Town called the "fynbos,"
which is an area with a high number of endemic plants. The article states
that the area is being invaded by pines and acacias. I am curious to
know if these pines are exotics or natives and how widespread a problem
this may be in S. Africa. The Jonkershoek Forestry Research Centre was
said to have found that these invading trees are significantly altering
the water supply to Cape Town. Is this relationship accepted by
foresters in S. Africa? If this is an old issue in S. Africa, please
excuse my lack of knowledge about S. African forestry. Please reply at
your convenience.
Sincerely yours,
Douglas J. Marshall
