How do you define 'sustainability' in the context of forest management? What are suitable indicators of sustainable use? How might 'sustainability' be assessed practically? If you're interested in these questions, and in developing constructive answers, I'd like to hear from you. I'm particularly keen to learn of relevant work in this area, and examples of forests that are being managed on an apparently sustainable basis. I'm also interested to hear your opinions - even if you think assessing sustainability is an unworkable concept! I'm collecting information for the project 'Conservation and sustainable management of trees' funded by the Dutch Government and implemented by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in collaboration with the IUCN Species Survival Commission. Any information or opinions I receive which I include in the project report will of course be fully acknowledged and sourced in detail. Please get in touch if you require further details, or merely if you want to 'sound off' on the subject. Reply to A.Newton@ed.ac.uk, unless you want to share your opinions with everybody on the list.
