I discarded the original posting from Jean Daniels about economic valuation of
the red-cockaded woodpecker, so I'm sending this to the entire list -- for that
I apologize.
A reference you will want to check out is:
Hyde, William F. 1989. Marginal costs of managing endangered species: The
case of the red-cockaded woorpecker. Journal of Agricultural Economics Research
(published by the USDA) vol. 41, no. 2, pp. 12-19.
There is a vast body of literature on the economic value of endangered species,
and another body of literature pointing out the shortcomings of the various
economic valuation approaches. I have a bibliography on these topics, which I
could send if you're interested.
