Conference Objectives
Already in excess of 30 million people, California's population will
continue to undergo rapid growth in the coming decades. Rates of population
increase in the urban-rural interface, a region in close proximity to major
forest areas, are likely to exceed statewide rates. Higher population
levels, increases in incomes and leisure time, and changing social
preferences and values, will lead to ever-increasing demands on our forests
in terms of recreational benefits, environmental benefits, and commodity
benefits such as timber production. These collective demands and
expectations of our forests portend unprecedented pressures and dilemmas.
Development of viable strategies for accommodating multi-faceted human
demands requires early and insightful recognition of emerging trends and
conditions.
The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for the presentation
and exchange of different and potentially conflicting perspectives on key
demographic, economic, ecological, and managerial trends and issues, and
their implications for the future of California's forests.
