Hi all, > From: Raymond Czaplewski:S28A > Date: ## 09/08/95 13:01 ## > Does anyone know of established methods to quantify the degree of > forest fragmentation? There is a fragmentation index which is rather simple to use and efficient. It is based on the number of runs between forest and other cover type pixels (Matheron index). It has been used in the TREES Project (JRC, Ispra) to quantify fragmentation patterns (a catalogue of fragmentation has been issued and is to be published in the following weeks; see Jeanjean et al, Tropical Forest Fragmentation : Typology and Characterisation, European Symposium on Satellite Remote Sensing, 1994) and as a parameter in the two-step correction function of tropical forest area estimation with AVHRR data (Kleinn et al, Sampling aspects in the TREES project : global inventory of tropical forests, JRC/University of Freiburg, 1993, see also Mayaux and Lambin, Estimation of Tropical Forest Area from Coarse Spatial Resolution Data : A Two Step Correction Function for Proportional Errors Due to Spatial Aggregation, Remote Sensing and Environment 1995). For more details, please contact Jean-Paul Malingreau or Frederic Achard, TREES Project (Jean-Paul.Malingreau@jrc.it, Frederic.Achard@jrc.it).
