Does anyone know of established methods to quantify the degree of
forest fragmentation?

One of the indicators of ecosystem diversity is "Fragmentation of
forest types".  Are there generally cited papers on the fragmentation
issue?  Can fragmentation be quantified?  Thanks for any help or
leads.
