EFI Director Position Open

                          EUROPEAN FOREST INSTITUTE

welcomes applications for the post of

                                  Director

The Institute

The European Forest Institute is an independent, non-governmental
association with headquarters in Joensuu, Finland. The Institute conducts
problem-oriented and multi-disciplinary forest research at the European
level in order to serve the needs of policy-making and decision-making
bodies in Europe, as well as those of its members. Its research priorities
are forest sustainability; forestry and possible global climate change;
structural changes in markets for forest products and services; policy
analysis; and forest sector information services and research methodology.

The Institute currently has 53 member organisations from 29 countries, with
good prospects for further expansion. It thus provides an extensive research
network throughout Europe. The Institute functions also as an information
bank on the European forest and forest industry sector.

Basic funding for the Institute is provided by the Finnish Government but
funding from other public and private sources is becoming increasingly
significant.

The Director

The Director of EFI will be a person possessing leadership abilities and a
proven capacity for the management of scientific research in a complex
international environment. The candidate should have international
experience and a background relating to forestry research. A good command of
English is a necessity; knowledge of other major European languages is an
asset. The nationality of the candidate is not restricted to European
countries.

As chief executive officer the Director will be responsible for the
management of EFI, including formulation and implementation of the research
programme and other activities. The Director will engage staff within the
limits of the approved budget and is expected to maintain a stimulating
international working atmosphere at the Institute. He reports to the EFI
Conference, which meets annually, and to the Board, which usually meets
three times a year.

Salary and Appointment

Salary and benefits are commensurate with international standards for a
senior position of this nature. The appointee is expected to take up the
post in October 1996. A fixed term appointment for three to five years is
envisaged.

Further Information and Applications

Further information, including the selection criteria, is available from
Director Birger Solberg or Deputy Director Risto Päivinen. Written
applications should be concise, address the selection criteria, and include
a curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of three referees.
Applications are requested by 2 December 1995.
