FOREST BIOMETRICIAN OR MENSURATIONIST The New Zealand Forest Research Institute (NZ FRI) is seeking applicants for a position of scientist in the area of forest mensuration and management decision support systems. The scientist will be expected to conduct research leading to the development of methods, models and systems which will be used by forest managers in New Zealand's production forests. The scientist will work with a multidisciplinaryteam investigating: o Growth and yield of stands, to produce soundly-based models used by industry. o Forest inventory - sampling theory of operational assessments, new measurement methods, image processing of remotely acquired data. o Management and harvest planning systems, including the NZ FRI research programme for the recovery of value from the standing forest. The emphasis in the immediate future is on the development of growth models to be integrated with inventory, planning, and optimum value recovery. A pplicants should have very good academic qualifications at the level of a PhD, who are able to bridge the gap between forest management and the quantitative sciences of biomathematics, statistics, management science, and computer science. The person we are looking for would have: o A PhD. o A batchelors degree and post-graduate degrees covering both forest management and biometrics, or management science or computer science, with first or upper second class honours or equivalent. o An interest in applying research results to practise. o A desire to achieve prominence within New Zealand and internationally.
