Faculty Research Assistant - Ecological Simulation Modeler
LOCATION: Department of Forest Science, Oregon State

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in the development of a spatially
explicit model of vegetation dynamics and land-use change for the
Oregon Coast Range. Work will involve assisting in development
and application of innovative methods for scaling-up of a stand-
level process model to a landscape level, and spatial analysis of
land-use change over the past 20 years. These efforts will
involve extensive analysis of empirical data sets using graphical
and statistical techniques, and the ARC/INFO Geographic
Information System; data base management; interfacing among micro,
workstation, and Unix-based mainframe computers; and computer
programming in C and FORTRAN. Responsibilities will include
maintaining model and metamodel documentation, writing technical
reports, and assisting in preparation of journal publications.
These modeling efforts are part of a large multidisciplinary
project with the goal of understanding and modeling natural and
human components of the Oregon Coast Range ecosystem.
QUALIFICATIONS: MS with an emphasis in forest and landscape
ecology. Demonstrated experience with simulation modeling and in
building empirical models. Extensive knowledge and experience in
use of microcomputers, workstations, statistical packages (e.g.,
SAS, S-PLUS), graphical analysis techniques, the ARC/INFO
Geographic Information System, and DOS and UNIX operating systems.
Programming proficiency in C and FORTRAN languages desirable.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS; Full-time, 12-month position.
Reappointment at the discretion of the Dean. Salary $24,000 to
$27,000 per year depending on qualifications.
