Objectives:
The course will provide management leadership, technical, and
scientific training for the participants in the areas of nursery
management and reforestation. The participants will learn
effective skills to properly manage ongoing or projected programs
of reforestation extension, technology transfer, and management.
This course is equally applicable to forestry restoration and
agroforestry programs.
Participants:
The participants should be mid-level managers of private
companies or governmental agencies with a commitment toward
reforestation at the local, region, or national level. A minimum
of 6 participants is required. A maximum of 20 participants will
be accepted. English proficiency is required.
Course Description:
This is a manager's level course in reforestation that focuses on
the integration of such issues as nursery culture, site
preparation, planting, monitoring, logistics, personnel training,
and the carrying out of operational trials to improve
reforestation success in temperate and tropical countries.
Improving leadership and management skills is also an important
consideration in this course. Each participant will be provided
with ample course notes and have access to the necessary reading
materials. This is an intensive course which will require all
participants to complete homework assignments in the evening and
take part in lively discussions during the classroom lectures and
field trips.
Schedule:
Week 1: Participants will attend lectures on nursery cultural
practices, visit a seed processing facility and several
nurseries, and meet with nursery managers (3 days
classroom, 2 days field)
Week 2: Participants will attend lectures on reforestation and
nursery technology, visit field sites, and interpret
different kinds of reforestation plans.
Week 3: Participants will take part in lectures on logistics,
effective ways to develop a reforestation plan for an
area, and leadership. The participants will be divided
up into small teams and develop a reforestation plan
taking into account environmental concerns.
Fee: The fee for the three-week course is U.S. $3,000. It
includes tuition, course materials, and field trips.
Transportation to and from Oregon, living expenses, and mandatory
health insurance are the responsibility of the participant or the
sponsoring agency.
