VENEER PRODUCTION
AND PLANTED FORESTS
Information sought from Non-North American Countries
I am currently preparing a report for the American Plywood Association on
potential sources of veneer for the U.S. plywood industry. The focus will be
on species which will be available in significant quantities, on a
sustainable basis, to support a program of veneer imports in the future.
Both hardwood and softwood species will be included. Information is being
compiled by species and country, including those areas which do not currently
have veneer production-- for example, information on Chile's radiata pine
resource is included, although the amount of radiata pine veneer produced
today is quite small, all produced by 3 small mills exporting to Asia.
However, the potential for veneer production, especially when the pruned
logs become more available, is quite large. This report will be distributed
free of charge to all APA member companies at their annual meeting in
September, 1995. APA hopes that its members will use this report as a guide
in developing projects to import veneer from overseas (in the past, companies
have sometimes expended considerable time and effort to import native forest
species which are very limited in supply-- the focus of this report will be
on plantation species being produced on a sustainable basis).
If you are involved in any research on veneer production with plantation
species (fast-growing), I would like to hear from you.

Bob Flynn
