EVENT: IUFRO XX World Congress and the World Wide Web

IUFRO XX World Congress on 6-12. August 1995 in Tampere, Finland

IUFRO Congress and the World Wide Web
=====================================

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a network of interlinked hypertext and
hypermedia documents. It is one of the services provided by the Internet.

The location of a document in the Internet can be identified by a special
address, the Universal Resource Locator (URL). For example, the address
of the IUFRO gopher is "gopher://iufro.boku.ac.at/1" and that of the IUFRO
XX World Congress (with links to detailed congress-related information) is

To access the WWW directly from a micro computer one needs a connection
to the Internet network and a browser program.

Typical alternatives for Internet connection are a hard-wired line
maintained by the employer or a dial-up connection using modems and phone
lines. Special networking software is required. Many countries have access
providers for both academic/research institutions and private/commercial
customers. More information from URL:

The program that displays WWW information is called a browser. Two popular
ones available for different types of computers are Mosaic (free) and
Netscape (free only for educational or charitable organisations).

When a direct connection is not available, a terminal connection to a
multiuser computer can be used but then one is usually limited to a plain
text connection and images have to be viewed separately after retrieving
them. There are free-access services to which one can make a remote
connection with "telnet" or similar software. For example, to use a
text-based gopher and www server one can telnet to "info.funet.fi" .

It is also possible to read WWW documents by using e-mail, with a service
provided the W3 Consortium. To retrieve a document, you have to specify
its URL. For example, to retrieve the IUFRO Congress home page, send an
e-mail message to "agora@mail.w3.org", with whatever subject you like, the
body of the mail being: "WWW http://www.metla.fi/iufro/congress.html".

AGORA-INFO:
Agora is currently not available and the W3Consortium is not able
to run the service for the whole web-community. The software
will be set up at several locations and you are supposed to
send your requests to the nearest server.
We are trying to get Agora installed in Finland.
If you know of any other www-by-mail services, please let us know.
