For those of you who were not at the Alaska meeting to see it, you might want to know about a new instrument that Walter Bitterlich has manufactured. For details, you can contact: Dr. Benno Hesske, FOB Karolingerstrasse 45 Postfach 12 A-5035 Salzburg, Austria They are the makers of Bitterlich's Relascopes as well. It works like a pair of dividers with a centeral slide that measures distance down to the stem from the apex of the dividers. Using the measurements taken it then provides a drawing of the tree cross-section, including any dips and crevices. This has been attempted before, with rings put around the stem and measurements taken from the ring to the stem, but this is a very simple and portable method for getting an actual stem cross-section.
