Emulation of natural disturbance with timber harvesting

Netters:

I am looking for information regarding emulating natural disturbance
patterns by timber harvesting. Natural disturbance could include
fire, windthrow (blowdown), and insects/diseases. I am especially
interested in the disturbance pattern by frequency and size class in
the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest in Canada and in Boreal forests
anywhere.

I am currently developing guidelines for harvest layout and
configuration for the Ontario Ministry of Natral Resources, Canada.
If you could provide me with background literature and on-the-ground
implementation experience, it would be greatly appreciated.
