EFI in cooperation with FAO and ECE/FAO is pleased to announce that coniferous sawnwood trade flow data has been placed on the World Wide Web (WWW) of the Internet. The address of EFI's "node" is: http://www.efi.joensuu.fi/ Look under "Databases" where you will also find the EFI catalogue of data sources and other experimental databases. This first attempt to put forest products trade flow data on the WWW gives a set of tables with three levels of detail. First, a set of tables of major importers and exporters is given. These give the trade flows of the world's 15 largest exporters and 25 largest importers. All other countries fall in a "NES" (not elsewhere specified) category. This follows the format of the FAO Yearbook direction of trade tables and the ECE/FAO trade flow tables. The importers and exporters are ranked according to level of exports or imports. Second, a set of tables of regional summaries of imports and exports is given. The regions are continents in this first test. Other regional groupings of countries will be added later. If no country name is available for one end of a trade flow then that data is placed in the "Non-specified" region. Third, a set of tables of countrywise imports and exports is given. In these tables, a total of 191 importers and 137 exporters can be found. If no country name is available for one end of a trade flow then that data is referred to as having an "Unspecified" country name and the data ends up in the "Unspecified" region. The coniferous sawnwood trade flow data used in this trial is unofficial and is used solely for purposes of testing possible formats for placing trade flow data on the WWW.
