We are a paper company in northern Minnesota (Grand Rapids), managing 200,000 acres of Minnesota forest land. We'd like to present the following question for response: Following timber sale activity, it is sometimes desireable to rehab the landing site itself. Our soils range from sand-loams to clay-loams, but predominately heavy silt loams. Qu: To what depth will compaction interfere with tree growth? or: How deep must the soil be loosened to overcome the effects of the intense compaction which occurs with such concentrated activity? Disking will loosen the surface layer, and is an option. Qu: Is that adequate for the long term? Will frost loosen the profile in time for the roots to grow into any deeper compaction layer? or is sub-soiling, or ripping required? and if so, to what depth? We would appreciate any replys or suggestions. Respond to Jim Gabriel 76654.720@compuserve.com
