** Proprietary ** The Washington Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) provides wildfire protection to 12 million acres of undeveloped private and state forest land. One of WDNR's responsibilities is to regulate the burning of forest debris for silvicultural objectives, hazard abatement, and to minimize smoke from silvicultural burning. Clean air is also a high priority for Washington's citizens. The Washington Clean Air Act requires emissions from silvicultural burning to be reduced by fifty percent by december 31, 2000. Given the acreage to be treated and the limited emissions levels allowed, it is no longer possible to rely only on burning to achieve silvicultural objectives and hazard abatement. WDNR's Smoke Management Plan requires the agency to develop a program to encourage alternatives to burning for silviculture and land clearing. I am seeking information on methods, equipment and techniques other than broadcast burning used to dispose of forest debris in other areas. I appreciate any information you are willing to share.
