Re: Forest stands: an advantage for trees or not?

Dear Mike Sonntag,

tree growth modeling is not my field.
However, I think main contents of your post
is in the field of philosophy of science.
And that is my hobby...

You are talking about "advantage" and "optimum".
What are the definitions of these concepts?

I would propose the following definitions:
Optimum:
The most effective way to reach a defined goal
in a specified environment.
Advantage:
A property of a solution making this particular solution
more effective in reaching the defined goal in a specified
environment.

Thus my argument is that optimality can be treated
only after defining both the goal and the environment.
I think the density of the stand must be an essential
factor in the environment of a tree...
