SYMPOSIUM ON NONINDUSTRIAL PRIVATE FORESTS:
LEARNING FROM THE PAST, PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE
February 19-20, 1996
Washington, DC

[July 31, 1995 Deadline for Speaker and Poster Abstracts]

PURPOSE: This symposium will give broader exposure to significant
research and program evaluations conducted during the last 10 years
concerning management of nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) lands,
including:
-Landowner characteristics and motivation.
-Effectiveness and efficiency of existing programs concerning:
     Education
     Technical Assistance
     Cost-sharing
     Income taxes
     Estate and gift taxes
     Property taxes
     Government regulations
     Conservation easements
-Benefits accruing from NIPF lands and from government programs aimed at
NIPF lands.
-Extent to which current programs address ecosystem management needs.
-Research methods related to the study of NIPF landowners and evaluations
of programs aimed at them.

Sharing this knowledge through the symposium and published proceedings will
enable program administrators, interest groups, and researchers to:
-Document to what extent past programs have improved forest conditions and
the quality of human life.
-Document harvest levels on NIPF lands in response to decreased harvesting
on federal lands.
-Fine-tune existing NIPF programs and policies.
-Contribute knowledge to legislative and other public policy debates.
-Identify research gaps.

AUDIENCE: We expect an international audience of natural resource
professionals and association representatives that is interested in
management of NIPF lands.
-Research institutions
-State and federal forestry agencies
-Extension services
-Forest landowner associations
-Consultants
-Forest industries
-Conservation organizations

FORMAT: During general and concurrent sessions, a series of speakers will
describe their research or program evaluations. A poster session will
enable a broader range of participants to display their research or program
evaluations. Poster space will be approximately 4 feet high by 8 feet wide.

PROCEEDINGS: Papers from all speakers and abstracts from all posters will
be published in a proceedings. Papers and abstracts will be due at the
symposium. The proceedings will be published approximately three months
after the symposium.
