Forest monitoring at a national scale began in the United States with
the need for a timber supply inventory in the 1930s. The U.S.D.A. Forest
Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA or Forest Survey) Program
has evolved over the years toward more holistic, ecological assessments.
The FIA Program is today undergoing accelerated redirection toward
ecological concerns while continuing its mission to assess U.S. timber
supplies.
