To the FOREST list: A friend of mine who is a civil engineer in the western USA is interested in techniques or technology to stabilize steep embankments (e.g. highway cuts), 45 degrees or more, via rooting native species (willow? aspen? shrubs?), particularly in upland/mountain, desert, or alpine climates. As he describes it, these steep slopes can be engineered to be structurally stable, for the most part, but they are looking for additional surficial stability via a deep-rooted woody species, having had limited success in these climates with herbaceous ground cover. If anyone knows of research or existing technology that sounds close to this, please e-mail to me. Thanks. Wade Harrison 70640.2741@compuserve.com
