I would appreciate if you would distribute this message to anyone who might be interested. Thanks for your consideration! =================================================================== Scholarship for PhD in Forest Genetics in Sweden A scholarship for a PhD-student in forest genetics in Sweden is available. The PhD work should focus on problems like effects of selection and generation shifts on diversity and gain in small populations during several generations. Breeding theory and simulation are important tools. Simulation of Swedish breeding programs will probably be a part of the study. No evaluation of actual experiments is foreseen. The scholarship is for about four years. If too little progress is made it may be cancelled earlier, but this is not common. There may be possibilities for a short prolongation beyond four years. Professor Dag Lindgren will be main supervisor. The scholarship is formally a position localised to Umea at Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The salary is somewhat above 14000 SEK a month, which is comparable to what a senior technician get in our department. The main objective is to qualify for a Swedish PhD. The most important qualifications required are ability and interest to develop the math and simulation techniques of breeding theory and ability to learn to write scientific papers in English. It is possible to live and work here without knowing Swedish, but good knowledge in English is required. At present our forest genetic group has 6 PhDs, 4 active PhD students and one visiting scientist. A student who does not know Swedish must have background and experiences in forest genetics. It is better the earlier the studies/work can commence. A basic University degree is required and a MSc desirable when applicable. It is common that a Swedish PhD thesis comprises four or more papers written for refereed journals. Usually there are papers with several authors, which reflects that teamwork is common. The Swedish research education is more a research school and less of organised courses than other systems, and this doctorand is expected to do useful research within a month. Still an essential part of the task is learning, training and courses (some of this is usually made outside Umea). This training can be part of a carrier as Tree Breeder or Scientist. If you want further information, please contact Dag Lindgren. If you apply you should include a CV; you may mention some reference persons you think I may know and can contact; enclose at least one document with you as author or first author; and write 2-3 pages where you present yourself in general and in particular what is relevant for the position. The information above may help. Give an indication when you can start. It is important that we know how to get in contact with you fast (e-mail, fax or phone) and what media we should prefer for further fast communication. Questions about formal conditions of employment can be answered by Anna-Lena Arvidsson tel 46 18 671884. If you want to talk with representatives of the employees you may contact Lars Lundqvist tel 46 90 166288 or Erik Walfridsson tel 46 90 165879. Your application should refer to 1356/95-1403. Dead-line is April 20, 1995. It should be sent to: Registrator vid Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet, Box 7070, 75007 UPPSALA, Sweden. Your application will land on my desk, but it has to go the official path. If there are problems to get mail to Sweden in time to meet the dead-line, you may send a copy of the first page of your application to me on fax (46 90 165901) at latest April 20, when we will wait till April 30 for the formal complete application.
