The growing world-wide emphasis on sustainability of natural
resource management has profound implications for plantation
forestry. The land available for plantations is finite and
demands for forest products continue to increase. Small-
scale farm forestry and producers of plantation-grown timber
will have to demonstrate that their forest management
practices are sustainable. This QFRI-IUFRO conference will
focus on practical ways in which aspects of tree
improvement, site quality, propagation and biotechnology
research can contribute to sustainable small-scale and
plantation forestry in the tropics.
The program includes
Session themes (invited and voluntary papers and posters)
Exploration, conservation and utilisation of forest
genetic resources
Reproductive biology
Genetic parameters and selection strategies
Advances in propagation technology
Improvement strategies for sustainability, including
the use of hybrids and clonal forestry
Matching genotypes to sites
Tree improvement for resource poor farmers
Maintenance of site quality with emphasis on acacias
and other nitrogen fixing trees
Applications of biotechnology
Seed sale trade displays
Demonstrations of computer packages relating to tree
improvement.
Field day demonstrations
Post-conference tour of tree improvement activities and
other attractions in tropical North Queensland.
