Dear Becky: In regards to your question about pre-settlement conditions of the Pacific Northwest, I would suggest several different options. First, you should request a copy of the Option 9 EIS that was generated by the Forest Service about one or two years ago. That EIS "analyzed" pre-settlement conditions from a certain point of view. From a different point of view, you might want to contact Bob Zybach, a graduate student of the College of Forestry, Oregon State University, who has conducted extensive research about the pre-settlement conditions - particularly in regards to fires. Unfortunately, I do not have his phone number, but a call to the College of Forestry will lead you to him. The USFS Option 9 EIS can be obtained at many USFS supervisor offices.
