Perhaps not utter futility ;-).  

Somebody else wrote me privately to say that my LP models were just a
*more complex* formula. :-) That may be true, but of course I was
referring to the application of relatively simple formulas (i.e., Heyer's,
Gerhardt's) to complex forests, as described by the original poster.
