Tampere University Library
--------------------------
Tampere University Library includes the Main Library and three departments.
The Main Library is located in an old shoe factory called Attila building
not far away from the University main building and quite near to Tampere
Hall. The University Library was appointed in 1984 by the Council of State
the central research library for social politics, sociology, social
psychology, information studies, and journalism and mass communication.
The collections and services are available to all users. TAMCAT, The
Library's online catalogue, can be used in all service points. The Finnish
national online catalogue called LINDA is also available to all users.

Public Library - An architectural Flight of Fancy
-------------------------------------------------
The main public library of Tampere, "Metso", is one of the most famous new
buildings in Finland. The library is planned by the key figures of the
modern Finnish architecture, the architects Raili and Reima Pietil„. The
library was opened to the public in 1986.
The Pietil„s' architectural topology is bold, experimental and
provocative. The bird-shaped building stands at the cross-roads of two
parks. The book halls open in both directions, allowing visual, symbolical
and metaphorical unity between the green spaces. Around the library
building, there is a fascinating forest of Finnish trees and plants.
The building and its interiors are mostly handcrafted. All the
furniture and fittings, down to the last detail, have been designed by the
Pietil„s specially for this library. At the main floor, there is the foyer
dome, which has an inclination of 11 degrees to the south. Copper and
granite are the main construction material.
The main library of Tampere has won many national awards. In 1993,
1,4 million visitors entered the library.
At the ground floor of the library there is the Moominvalley. It is a
museum, which is based on the original works of Tove Jansson, a famous
Finnish author. At the Moomin Valley, you can step into the magic world of
moomins and see the magnificent Moominhouse. The Moomin books and films are
well-known all over the world.
