ANNOUNCEMENT (draft) 14 February 1995 Making Forest Policy Work The Oxford Forestry Institute, with the IIED and SGS Forestry, will run a new four week course from 3-28 July entitled Making Forest Policy Work. The focus of the course will be to confront the central issues of forest policy and practice in an increasingly challenging global environment, building on the experience and expertise of key players, analysts and opinion makers in forest policy both in the United Kingdom and worldwide. The course is divided into two modules: Week 1, a week of one day seminars which can be attended either for one day or for the whole series; and Weeks 2-4 comprising three weeks of coursework of more specialist interest. Seminars in Week 1 include: `Forests in sustainable development: political and practical challenges'; `Economic challenges and practical responses'; `Sustainable forests, sustainable forestry'; `Working with people'; and `Envisioning the future'. Weeks 2-4 focus on processes and actions which help develop and implement forest policy solutions. Discussions will centre on understanding the policy process, and economic and programme assessment practices relevant to forestry. The problems encountered will be assessed by means of a major case study analysis.
