Research Scientists and Specialist: Tree Biotechnology
Westvaco, a major manufacturer of pulp, paper and specialty chemicals is
seeking four research scientists and a specialist in our Forest Research
organization. Major emphasis will be on hardwood research which will
complement an existing pine biotechnology program. These individuals
will be located at Westvaco's Forest Science Laboratory in Summerville,
South Carolina.
Westvaco's world-class Forest Research program emphasizes forest
genetics, biotechnology, productivity, biometrics, harvesting, and
environmental protection. Research is conducted using an
interdisciplinary team approach to meet the objectives of specific
missions. The selected individuals will be expected to integrate,
contribute and communicate effectively with other colleagues in this
team research environment.
Four Ph.D. scientists and one B.S. or M.S. specialist are needed. Both
advanced and entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Additional
requirements for the positions are as follows:
Scientists: Transformation/Tissue Culture
Two Scientists to develop research programs for highly efficient tissue
culture and genetic transformation of hardwood species. Experience in
plant tissue culture and/or plant genetic transformation required.
Background with woody plants is desirable, but not essential.
Scientist: Genetic Engineering of Sterility
Scientist to develop research program on the physiological, biochemical
and molecular basis of flowering with the goal of engineering sterility
into trees. Strong background in molecular biology required.
Background in molecular biology of sterility in plants desirable.
Scientist: Genetic Engineering of Herbicide/Stress Resistance
Scientist to develop research program on genetic engineering of
herbicide and stress resistance into trees. Strong background in plant
physiology and/or molecular biology required. Experience in one or
more of the following areas is desirable: mode of action of plant
stress resistance, plant transformation, and greenhouse or field
testing of transgenic plants.
Specialist: Application of DNA Markers
Specialist to develop DNA markers for the identification of selected
clones of forest trees. Experience in DNA analysis including DNA
isolation (preferably from plants) and handling, restriction digestion,
DNA amplification and gel electrophoresis required. The successful
applicant should have a M.S. degree in Biology (or related field) or a
B.S. degree with equivalent experience.
