Forest Research Scientists
Westvaco, a major manufacturer of pulp, paper, and specialty chemicals,
is seeking a number of scientists to complete a major expansion of our
forest research program emphasizing hardwood research. Six Ph.D.-level
scientists are currently being sought. Three positions will be located
at Westvaco's Forest Science Laboratory in Summerville, South Carolina.
The other positions will be located at research facilities in Wickliffe,
Kentucky and Rupert, West Virginia.
In each case, the successful candidate must have a proven record of
original research. Leadership potential and excellent communication
skills are required. Our world-class Forest Research program and teams
emphasize forest genetics, biotechnology, hardwood productivity, pine
productivity, biometrics, harvesting, sustainability, and environmental
protection. Research is conducted using an interdisciplinary approach
to meet the objectives of specific research missions. The incumbent is
expected to integrate, contribute, and communicate effectively with
colleagues in this research approach. Requirements for the positions
are as follow:
Hardwood Nutrition Scientist
Scientist to develop a research program to identify, test, and pre-
scribe nutritional requirements for various hardwood plantation
species on Westvaco's landtypes. Strong background in forest nutri-
tion, soils, and ecology desired. Located in Summerville, South
Carolina.
Fiber Farming Scientist (Agronomist)
Scientist to develop a research program to support an intensive hard-
wood fiber farming program, including irrigation, fertilization, weed
control. Strong background in intensive agronomic systems, woody
plant culture, and nutrition desired. Located in Summerville, South
Carolina.
Vegetative Propagation Scientist
Scientist to develop a research program to test and deploy superior
hardwood clones by rooted stem cuttings. Strong background in tree
improvement, production and rooting of stem cuttings, and woody plant
culture desired. Located in Summerville, South Carolina.
Hardwood Plantation Silviculture Scientist
Entry-level scientist to support a growing hardwood plantation
program in the areas of weed control, plantation establishment and
species/site relationships. Background in plantation silviculture,
weed control, and soils desired. Located in Wickliffe, Kentucky.
Cottonwood Breeder
Experienced scientist to develop a controlled breeding and testing
program in cottonwood, other poplars, and aspens. Background in
forest genetics and greenhouse management required. Located in
Wickliffe, Kentucky.
Natural Hardwood Silviculture Scientist
Scientist to build on existing program of natural hardwood
silviculture research in the Appalachians. Background in natural
stand silviculture, ecology, and weed control desired. Located in
Rupert, West Virginia.
All positions will require a Ph.D. degree or equivalent with experience
to include design, installation, and maintenance of field studies. All
except the Agronomist position require at least one degree in forestry.
Salary commensurate with experience and training.
