Backkground

The regional and national analysis of the production potentials of forests is becoming more and
more important in the development of forest policy, for example, for using and managing forest
resources and maintaining biodiversity. The key problems when deciding on the sustainable use
of the renewable natural resources are (1) what are the expected production potentials over time
and how they depend on human activities and external factors, and (2) how to manage the
resources in order to meet the future needs of societies in changing conditions. In forestry, large-
scale models are tools for such analysis. Indeed, a variety of approaches and models has been
developed for forestry analysis. Expertise of several disciplines needs to be integrated in the
models. Some problems cannot be solved based on local information only. Natural and
administrational regions may differ from each other. International co-operation and teamwork
is needed to develop compatible models for regional analysis. To prepare for future modeling
efforts, European Forest Institute (EFI) and Finnish Forest Research Institute (FFRI) will organize
an International Seminar and Summer School on large-scale forestry modeling and analysis.
Aims

The summer school and the seminar should bring together large-scale forestry modeling
scientists from different disciplines and approaches with the users of the models and analysis
results. The aims of this meeting are to:

introduce large-scale forestry analysis worldwide: questions, approaches, methods, results,
make participants familiar with some advanced and widely applied forestry models and
analyses in Europe and in USA.
summarize experiences and requirements for large-scale forestry modeling, and
plan and propose future forestry modeling activities in Europe and international co-
  operation.

The Seminar gives an overview on the state-of-the-art of forestry models and their recent
practical applications. The Seminar is intended to share the experiences of the international
modeling specialists also for a wider audience of forest management planning and forest policy
experts than the participants of the following Summer School.

The Summer School creates an opportunity to a limited number of present and future forestry
modelers and analysts to a get deeper touch with different forestry models via trying and
evaluating them in practical exercises on solving common forest policy and forest management
questions. The participants are also encouraged to introduce their own planning problems to be
tried on the test systems. Own experiences and discussions with the tutors should give the
participants a basis for considering further national and international forestry modeling efforts.

Besides national and international modeling issues, new forest management planning
technologies and high tech applications in Finnish forestry are introduced on an over-weekend
field trip to North Karelian forests.

Who should attend?

Depending on your interests, you may attend to
(1) the seminar only,
(2) the seminar and the field trip, or
(3) the seminar, the field trip and the summer school.

The seminar is open to 50-60 participants. The summer school is aimed at scientists involved in
forestry modeling. Interest should be found, for example, in the fields of forest policy, forest
economics, forest management planning, growth and yield modelling, and forest inventory in
universities, forest research bodies, forest ministries, forest management organisations, etc. The
number of participants of the summer school is limited to 15-20.Venue

Deadline for Registration

The deadline for applications to the summer school is 15 March 1995. The participants of the
summer school will be selected among the applicants by the end of April.

The deadline for registrations to the seminar and field trips is April 15, 1995.
