January 23, 1995 POSITION VACANCY FOREST BIOMETRICIAN CLASSIFICATION: Senior Scientist/Project Scientist REFERENCE NUMBER: 4512-032/1294 (cite in all correspondence) CLOSING DATE: February 17, 1995 (re-opened) ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Participate in a team oriented research project assessing the carbon dynamics of forest ecosystems at country to regional scales, including the effects of changes in land cover, land use, and land management. The current research focus is to quantify the carbon flux (either sink or source) from changes in land use and land cover for several major boreal, temperate, and tropical countries. The primary duties will be: 1) estimate errors and their propagation for all components of national-scale terrestrial C budgets; 2) design sampling strategies for data collection from field sites to remote sensing scenes; 3) perform statistical analysis of inventory data for estimating status and trend of forest biomass-carbon densities; 4) design a data management system, including quality control procedures, for keeping track of estimates of means and associated errors of carbon budget components that vary over time and space; and 5) write research reports and peer-reviewed publications. Computer work will be conducted on an extensively distributed network of 30 UNIX workstations (primarily Sun Sparc, with color displays and 28-64 Mbytes of memory), with several color printers and plotters, CD readers, 8mm, 1/4" and 1/2" tape systems, and 65 gigabytes of disk storage. This network supports the public domain software from the Free Software Foundation (Gnu), as well as IPW, GRASS, ARC/INFO, ARC/GRID, PV-WAVE, PCI, TecPlot, SAS, S+, Lotus, Troff, Eroff, LaTex, Wordperfect, Mathematica, and Island Graphics Software. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include: 1) PhD in biometrics or statistics and at least one other degree in forestry or ecology or PhD in forestry or ecology and at least one other degree in statistics or biometrics; 2) experience in environmental statistical applications; 3) familiarity with sampling theory, error estimation and propagation, multivariate techniques, and exploratory data analysis; 4) experience with publishing in the peer-reviewed literature; 5) demonstrated research experience in a team environment. Preferred candidates will possess experience with any of the following: 1) statistical analysis of forest inventory or other data for estimating carbon density and flux; 2) modeling of ecological processes in a GIS environment; 3) working with remote sensing data; and 4) geostatistics. Physical Demands: 1) use of a computer keyboard and reading a computer screen; and 2) traveling independently. APPLICATION: Send a cover letter specifically addressing how you meet each of the minimum and preferred qualifications including years of experience, a detailed curriculum vita, salary requirements, and the names and telephones numbers of at least three professional references by the February 17, 1995 closing date to: Human Resources ManTech Environmental Research Services Corporation 1600 SW Western Blvd Corvallis, OR 97333 503-753-6221 FAX: 503-758-0821 AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
