The University of British Columbia
Department of Forest Sciences
The University, in collaboration with NSERC, several Forest Industry
and Conservation organizations and the B.C. Ministry of Forests, has
recently established two tenure-track NSERC/Industry Research Chairs
in the Department of Forest Sciences; one in the area of population
genetics and one in quantitative genetics. The chairs have assured
funding for 5 years starting September 1995 and each is supported by
guaranteed research budget of $90,000 per annum for that period.
After five years, and subject to favourable reviews, NSERC support
will continue as a declining rate while the University's share will
increase. The senior chair is expected to be filled at the Full
Professor level, and the junior one at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level. Both will include research responsibilities while
teaching duties will be limited for the first five years. The two
fields of study have not been assigned to the two positions.
Applicants are asked to indicate the field of study and the
position (senior, junior or both) for which they wish to be
considered.
The research program will be aimed at understanding the evolutionary
dynamics of forest organisms and at designing programs for
conservation and use of their genetic resources. It will be expected
to provide advice and guidance to Forest Industries and the B.C.
Ministry of Forests in these areas, and will be advised by a committee
consisting of scientists, conservationists and forest managers.
The University of B.C. has established programs in several areas of
biology and management which would lend strength to this program in
Population Genetics and which would benefit from its expertise. The
Centre for Applied Conservation Biology, the Centre for Biodiversity
Research, the Sustainable Development Research Institute, and the
academic departments of the Faculties of Forestry, and Agricultural
Sciences form a strong community of scholars.
The University of British Columbia welcome all qualified applicants,
especially women, aboriginal people, visible minorities and persons
with diabilities. In accordance with Canadian immigration
requirements this advertisement is directed to Canadian citizens
and permanent residents of Canada.
