Proposal: The role of disturbances in creating and
maintaining spatial mosaics is recognized. In the
boreal forest, fire is the major disturbance type
responsible for the dynamics of forests, and
patchiness of forest types of different age and
composition. To achieve the goal of Forest
Ecosystem Management and Sustainability, it is
essential to understand the role of natural fire
regimes in shaping the boreal forest landscapes.
The proposed project will focus on the
determination of natural landscape patterns
created by the natural fire regime in the Prince
Albert Model Forest. Then a comparison of the
actual (harvested) landscapes with the naturally
disturbed one could be undertaken, to assess the
impact of forestry practices on forest ecosystems.
The successful candidate will have a background in
landscape ecology, forest ecology and/or fire
ecology with field work experience. Familiarity
with GIS / modelling is an asset. The candidate
will also indicate willingness to cooperate with
other scientists working in the same study area.
