VENUE
Newcastle, the sixth largest city in Australia, is located at the mouth of
the Hunter River in southeast New South Wales, and is the economic centre
of the Hunter Region. Located approximately 170 km north of Sydney, the
city contains major port facilities, an area of heavy industry, and
excellent beaches and other recreational facilities. The Hunter Region has
an area of 31,000 km2, and a population of nearly 500,000 people. The
Region contains a complex mix of heavy industry, power stations, coal
mining, agricultural, and tourist activities. The Region contains Lake
Macquarie, the largest tidal lake in Australia, world-class vineyards, and
some of the best scenery in Australia. Increasing concern for the
preservation of the environment; forest conservation; soil, water, and air
quality; and other areas all make the Hunter an ideal outdoor laboratory
for environmental studies.
The University of Newcastle is located in a unique bushland setting about
12 km west of the city. With a total enrolment of over 15,000 students, the
university offers degree courses in 11 faculties. The university provides
easy access to the attractions of the Hunter, as well as Sydney, and is an
ideal setting for MODSIM 95.
On Wednesday, November 29, delegates will be able to sample the delights of
the Hunter Region vineyards. Buses will take participants to Kirkton Park
Country Hotel for the morning presentation session. The afternoon will be
left free, for wine tasting, golf (at Cypress Lakes, the championship
course in the middle of the vineyards), antiques and crafts, rides in
horse-drawn carriages, and general environmental exploration. The Congress
dinner in the evening will be held in the Great Cask Hall at Rothbury
Estate, one of the most magnificent venues in Australia. Buses will return
delegates to their accommodation in Newcastle late in the evening.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The theme for the Congress is Regional Development and Environmental
Change. Papers on more general aspects of modelling and simulation are also
welcome. Papers associated with the theme should focus on modelling the
relationships between, and problems associated with, development and the
environment on a regional scale. Interdisciplinary efforts are encouraged.
Distinct sections will include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Hydrology (e.g. land degradation, coastal management, water quality)
* Industrial, Mining, and Operations Research (e.g. process simulation,
environmental impacts)
* Ecology (e.g. terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, pest dynamics)
* Environmetric Methods and Applications
* Economics, Business, and Finance Modelling
* Econometric and Statistical Modelling
* Agriculture (e.g. crop and pasture modelling, weather extremes)
* Epidemiology (e.g. statistical and simulation modelling)
* Power Systems Engineering
* Climate and Air Pollution (e.g. anthropogenic impacts, climate change,
urban airshed modelling)
* Complex Interacting Systems (e.g. land-air interface, global change,
social systems)
* Modelling tools and methodology (e.g. scale problems, decision support
systems, inverse methods, computational advances)
Conference Facilities
Facilities for the presentation of papers will include computer screen
displays as well as the normally available media of slides/video/overhead
projectors. The conference organisers encourage authors to include
computer-based demonstrations in their conference presentation. The
facility will support both MacIntosh and IBM-compatible software.
Trade Display/Computer Software Demonstration
There will be available a personal computer laboratory with 25
IBM-compatible computers that may be used for software demonstration
purposes. In addition, there will be a trade exhibit featuring displays by
software and publishing companies, and industry.
Keynote Speakers
Keynote speakers will be invited to present major overviews of modelling in
their chosen fields. These include:
Professor Robert C. Spear, University of California, USA, Large simulation
models: calibration, uniqueness, and goodness of fit.
Dr Paolo Zanetti, Failure Analysis Associates, USA, Environmental modelling
- past, present, and future.
Professor M. Bruce Beck, University of Georgia, USA, and Imperial College,
London, Forecasting under the expectation of significant structural change.
Professor Graeme Goodwin, University of Newcastle, Australia
Estimation with missing data.
Workshops and Field Trips
Depending on interest, the organisers are planning to hold workshops or
field trips on Friday, December 1 in the following areas:
Workshop 1: urban airshed modelling
Workshop 2: hydrological modelling
Workshop 3: time series and systems analysis
Field Trip 1: mining impacts and rehabilitation
Field trip 2: agricultural problems
Minimum attendence for each of these is 20 persons. Workshops and field
trips associated with other topics will be organised if there is enough
interest.
