doghair thickets

I'm looking for any information on doghair thickets.  Has anyone done 
research into this subject?  The local opinion (USFS) seems to be that the 
best you can do with it is thin it out.  Has anyone looked at potential 
biological benefits of these thickets to the forest?  Thanks for any info.
