CTIA/WFGA 1995 Conference
Aug 28 - Sept 1, 1995
University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada
A joint conference of the Canadian Tree Improvement Association and
the Western Forest Genetics Association, sponsored by the British Columbia
Ministry of Forests and by the Centre for Forest Biology, University of
Victoria.
Theme: Evolution and Tree Breeding Advances in Quantitative and
Molecular Genetics for Population Improvement.
Developments in genetic theory, molecular genetics and applied
breeding in animal and crop species have been substantial over the last two
decades, particularly in the area of genetic response to selection over
many generations and understanding the basis of these responses.
Research and breeding efforts toward forest trees is relatively
new, with many tree breeding programs around the world just starting to
move into the second and third generation of breeding. Strategies chosen
today will deeply influence the options available to breeders in the
future.
The purpose of this conference is to revisit past issues in animal
and plant breeding in order to allow geneticists, tree breeders and other
tree improvement personnel an opportunity to discuss and consider this
information within the context of tree breeding theory and application.
Fundamental approaches to applied tree breeding, as it is today, is
unlikely to change, but this exploration should prove useful in developing
or refining existing breeding strategies for forest trees.
