On 6 November 1994 a severe wild fire swept through the Beerburrum State Forest, Queensland, Australia. This fire and another smaller fire devestated 5000 ha of plantation slash pine (Pinus elliottii). Many of the trees were young and were completely destroyed. Many thousands of cubic metres will have to go into water storage for use as sawlogs. Herein lies the problem. We have very little fresh water for storage purposes and are forced to use sea water because of years of drought and the log dump location. We have found very little reference to salt water log storage in our search of the literature. Has anyone researched or had any experience in the management and effects of prolonged salt water log storage on processing, product value and utility? We would be very grateful for any information or advice on this topic. Marcia Tommerup email: marciat@dpi.qld.gov.au
