Plenterwald as a forest managemtn approach has probably been used the most in some of Switzerland's montane forest regions. The system hs been described by Ammon, W. 1927, Das Plenterwaldgebiet von Schwarzenegg. SZF 1927, S. 311-6 Knuchel, H. 1950. Planung und Kontrolle im Forstbetrieb. Verlag Sauerlander &Co. Aarau, Switzerland Ellennberg, H.1963. Vegetation Mitteleuropas mit den Alpen. Verlag Eugen Ulmer, Stuttgart Biolley, H. 1901. Die pflegliche Bewirtschaftung des Waldes im Plenterbetrieb. SFZ 1901, S. 181-91 Tichy, A. 1891. Der qualifizierte Plenterbetrieb als nachstfolgende Entwicklungsstufe. Forsteinrichtungs-Methoden, 1891, Munchen. Leibundgut, H. 1945. Waldbauliche Untersuchungen uber den Aufbau von Plenbterwaldern. Mitt. schweiz. Anst. forstl. Versuchsw. 24., 219-296. (now the Institute for forest landscape and snow; you can find it on Mosaic) Leibundgut was Professor of Silviculture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and probably one of the few experts of Plenter Systems. One of his former doctoral candidate and asssitant now is professor of "Silviculture at the ETH and probably might be the best source for additional references. The Plenterwald as a mangement system is not very well understood outside the german (and to some degree french)language and literature. Some of those principles may be appropriate for montane forest ecosystems in the PNW and elsewhere.
